About This Site

Who? What? When? Why?

Stoo, Paul, and Ian in Shoretrooper helmets

As a massive Shoretrooper fan, I wanted to be able to link the good work of others in to a single page where visitors can easily find the answer to the age old question "Can I haz STL?!". This site is also here to give some advice on how to approach your build, and may be of help to newcomers to the cosplay world of Star Wars.

I have linked what I consider to be the best STL files you can currently find to make a good representation of the Shoretrooper's outfit. But as with anything, these do come with some caveats.

Research Research RESEARCH!

We have done years of research in to the Shoretrooper, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't do some of your own.

Before deciding on which kit maker/STL modeller you should invest your time, money, effort, and soul in to, try to follow this advice...

  • Collect as much Shoretrooper reference material (such as this photo album on the Shoretrooper Fam Facebook page from 2016) as you possibly can and only reference screen used outfits. There are plenty of albums on the ST Fam Facebook group showing the actual outfits used in Rogue One, so use them!

  • Don't use reference photos from someone elses kit unless it is to overcome a build problem, as they may be wrong and you'll then be wrong too. If you're stuggling to see details in the screen used albums, try to look at Mr Paul's photos as his research has been outstanding.

  • Picture of two screen used Shoretroopers prior to display

Think twice about purchasing a kit that claims to be "super accurate" or "screen used" as these usually don't stand up to scrutiny. Compare screen used reference to their photos, do you see the differences? If someone says their kit is accurate, challenge them to prove why it is, and don't just take their word for it. Too many prop builders say their stuff is accurate yet rarely tell you why they think this.

  • Always research the maker if you're buying a raw kit or planning to print STL's. How many people used them? When you examine photos of their kits do they actually look correct when comparing to screen used reference? Has anyone commented/posted on ST Fam with negative or positive feedback on the maker while working with the kit. This will also help you gauge if you're going to be taking on a job that's too big for you to manage. I have seen many hopeful kit buyers litterally chuck half or their purchase in the bin, or on a few occassions given up completely on it.

  • Do not send money to ANYONE without verifying what you're buying is as good as you're hoping, or that they are not a recaster. Never support recasters!

  • Seeing 500 people using the same kit doesn't make it suitable for your build, doesn't mean it's "accurate", or mean you'll easily get approved with a costuming group if that's your aim. You should buck the trend if you don't agree with those who are just trying to justify their own inability to compare good kit with bad. There's plenty of poor looking kits out there, and the general rule of thumb "you get what you pay for" stands true. If it's cheap, you normally end up paying much more to rectify the issues you'll find.

  • Join the Shoretrooper Fam Facebook page for community driven help, information and geekiness. If you're unsure about something, ask!

  • Remember that buying a completed kit from someone selling theirs as "approved" or "cleared" means very little. The clearance of a costume includes the person wearing it, not just the costume!

  • Try to have fun and enjoy your build!

Mr Paul's Shoretrooper Build

Best in Class Armour STL's and Cast Parts

Mr Paul's Shoretrooper Grunt Mr Paul's Shoretrooper Squad Leader

Paul has spent many years researching and perfecting the Shoretrooper, and has painstakingly reproduced every detail of the armour, helmet, soft parts and weapons seen in the Rogue One movie and subsequent Star Wars series appearances.

If you have a 3D printer, you can donate to the charity Headlines.org.uk via his website (Mr Paul's Shoretrooper Build) and you'll get access to the most highly detailed Shoretrooper STL files available. 100% of the donation is paid directly to the charity.

Paul can also provide cast items to accompany your build as not all parts are available in STL format. A full list of included files can be found on his website.

Paul does not currently offer STL's or commissions for a Shoretrooper helmet.

Shoretrooper Helmets

Nico Henderson's Shoretrooper Helmet STL's

Nico's Shoretrooper Helmet

Nico's STL files are a good take on the Shoretrooper helmet and widely accepted as being the go-to STL files. They are not screen accurate, but they do convey the right look and to an untrained eye will easily pass muster.

You can find these on Nico's Etsy shop DesertFareCosplay.

Ben Grieger's Shoretrooper Helmet STL's

Ben's Shoretrooper Helmet

Ben's files are relatively new to the scene and look to rival Nico's in some areas. These are not screen accurate, but carry some good details and are designed in a modular way that mimics the original screen used build process.

You can find these on Ben's Etsy shop NTX3D.

Chris Bostocks's Remix (based on Sean Fields' Mk5) Shoretrooper Helmet STL's

Chris's Shoretrooper Helmet

Chris was given the project files by Sean to remix his Mk5 helmet to make a few corrections and keep the helmet up to date. This is not considered screen accurate, but it is an improvement over Sean's previous versions which in my opinion should be avoided given that these are free files and readily available.

You can find these on Chris's Thingiverse page Starbug Props.

Cast Shoretrooper Helmets

There are cast helmet options available, but some are worse than others (some are truely horrendous so I have not mentioned them here!). Be sure to do your research before buying. ABS versions of the Shoretrooper helmet seem to be few and far between due to not giving sharp enough edges and complex shapes, so you'll mainly find casts of these helmets.

I do not have links, but you can search Shoretrooper Fam for more information.

Shoretrooper Armour

Ben Grieger's Shoretrooper Armour

Ben's Shoretrooper Armour

Ben's armour is a late comer to the ST scene and although not free, it is inexpensive and has a lot of improvements over any free versions available.

There is clear evidence that thought has been put into the file's to make printing and construction easier, and overall outcome would pass clearance without much trouble, but a couple of small details may need to be taken in to account if wanting to go for higher accuracy.

You can find these on Ben's Etsy shop NTX3D.

Sean Fields' Shoretrooper Armour

Sean Fields kindly gave his Shoretrooper files away to the community for free and they've been used by hundreds of kit builders around the world.

His files are not considered to be screen accurate, but they can be used as a good base to start from. Some costuming groups will approve this armour but most will require some parts to be revised to pass clearance. Keep this in mind when weighing up the cost of making changes using free files, versus the cost of more accurate files that are available. You may be able to find updated files for Sean's armour on Thingiverse.

If you are looking to print Sean's Shoretrooper helmet, I would suggest you avoid the early version in the Dropbox link and download Chris Bostocks remix helmet files. I would say the same for his early version of the E-22 blaster, again there are better versions now available such as Helvio's listed later on this page.

Helvio's E-22 (Kuroi Sabato v4)

Rendering of Helvio's E-22

A remastering of Sean's E-22 files, for free

Helvio Conti Rossini worked on improving Sean's E-22 project and has produced a very close to accurate version of the E-22 and given these for free for the ST community. Version 4 has also been modelled to accept electronics for sound and LED lighting.

This project refined many parts, making it the best self-print E-22 blaster to build.

Sean's project files were extensively remodelled by Helvio with feedback from my own research.
